“Time is the same regardless of how much you pay for the watch.”
- Craig D. Lounsbrough
Introduction
It is no secret that education costs are at an all-time high,
courses online can be just as costly, and skills to learn are
becoming more and more advanced. In a fast growing market such as tech we must learn a lot and at a very rapid pace.
The amount of information that we want to learn can come at a hefty cost if the desired outcome is to purchase the
most marketed material on the web. However, much like material items such as a watch and its ability to tell time
regardless of value, information regardless of its price can provide us knowledge.
For those not able to keep up financially with the ever growing education material
being marketed online, there are better methods to learning the same web development skills. In this article we
will be exploring free resources for you that you can visit and use TODAY without spending a penny!
Disclaimer: Free resources vary on quality and quantity of information. If you are an individual that requires extra
guidance and an instructor for accountability, then paid instructors/mentors could be the better route for you. Free resources are only
as good as your ability to stay accountable with your learning, analyze what is valuable information,
and apply information to your work.
Educational Videos
Instead of sitting in a classroom watching endlessly as the instructor verbally recites the curriculum to you that you were supposed to read by yourself prior to class, you can get much of the same quality of educational curriculum online. Youtube channels such as CS50 and FreeCodeCamp provide watches step by step lessons, visual demonstrations, and clear material communication that makes it easy for watchers to digest the content and learn complex concepts. These lectures can range from step-by-step guides to learn beginner syntax to deploying your first advanced mobile-responsive e-commerce website with transaction capabilities.
Coding Websites
Watching videos on Youtube is helpful and all, but a lot of the time watchers can find themselves continuously copying code rather than thinking and solving their own problems, which is a key aspect to web development. Website like the FreeCodeCamp Official Website gives you lessons that are progressive, roadmap specific (catered to the type of development you want to learn), provide end of course projects, and give out certificates of completion. There are plenty of other websites that you can get value from, but I have found FreeCodeCamp to provide the highest amount of value for your time.
Mobile Applications
As discussed in my article Top Two Apps For Learning Web Development, applications like Sololearn and Mimo are amazing free resources for learning programming. Although they have their paid versions, I have found great value in their free versions with countless step-by-step lessons and project ideas. I personally find SoloLearn more versatile as it has both a mobile app and website that has cross-progression (progress is saved to an account you can use both on the website and on your phone). A quick lesson at lunch or long sessions on the weekend can be tracked on the exact same account!
Conclusion
As you can see from the examples above, there are plenty of free resources and learning tool types for learning web development. All tech enthusiasts should be able to pursue the programming that they have passion for without financial concern. I hope these resources give you the motivation and momentum to not only start, but even advance your web development skills! Do not forget to share the article to spread this information to other aspiring web developers.
